Veteran's Day

On this Veteran's Day, originally Armistice Day, let's salute all those who did their duty as they understood it - even those, and perhaps especially those, who risk their lives in questionable causes. It's not their fault that our leaders are sometimes merely wrong and at other times purposely lie to us for their own twisted reasons.

And thanks to whoever puts up the flag at the end of my driveway, although I'm confused by what message it sends - that my yard is patriotic even if I'm too lazy to fly my own flag?

At any rate, thank a veteran today and buy him a beer.

On Veteran's Day do you salute (and buy beer for) those on the other side of the line? The good Nazi who just went along with the social momentum, the Russian boy who went to Afghanistan, the insurgent fighting for their country or their ideas even if you think they're twisted? Are we all just stuck in some Wilfred Owen poem? Are all veteran's included?
The big mistake of the Vietnam protests was demonizing the soldiers who were in part themselves victims. Anti-war protestors have learned this lesson and now make a conscious point of honoring our troops. They're risking their lives to protect us, after all. But the group-think is pretty thick. How could anyone dare criticize military personnel in this climate? You'd have to be almost stupid. Almost noone has the guts to publicly advocate a pacifist position.
